Emily C.

Emily joined FemSTEM in 2024 as a freshman. She strongly identifies with the mission of the club, as she was motivated to join after realizing the significant gender disparity in her school’s STEM-related classes. Once in an engineering class, she and her twin sister (Lydia) were the only girls in a class of at least 15 boys. She noticed that many qualified girls voluntarily refrained from participating, thus being discouraged from pursuing STEM careers from an early age. Through FemSTEM, she would like to encourage girls like herself who are interested in STEM to explore its fields and pursue their passions in it.

In the past, Emily has participated in Sungkyunkwan Center for Talent Education (SCTE) where she studied the topic of Renewable Energy, and the 2-year Seoul National University Gifted Program under Earth Science. Although she believes that her future is open to exploring many of her interests, she currently mainly focuses on Environmental Sciences. Through activities that cover a wide range of topics, she hopes to give all that she has learned to other girls who wish to learn about STEM. At the same time, she also believes the girls she teaches have unique perspectives and a lot of insight to offer that she could learn from as well.

As a member of FemSTEM, Emily is excited to be around so many other people that are interested in pursuing the STEM field. She believes that it creates an inviting atmosphere of inspiration and motivation. It's not just about the subjects themselves, but also the community and the sense of belonging that comes with it. Being surrounded with like-minded individuals can fuel creativity, spark collaboration, and ultimately drive progress in these fields.

Outside of her STEM interests, Emily spends her time like any other girl would. She likes to hang out with her friends, play basketball, and speak up at MUN conferences. She likes to scroll through fun YouTube videos of science experiments in her free time as well. Emily is fully engaged in being a part of FemSTEM, and is proud to be a member of this club.
