Jiyoo C.

Jiyoo Choi is a current sophomore, who joined FemSTEM due to her passion for teaching and STEM subjects. She is excited to spread her interests in biology and chemistry to younger students and foster an interactive, inclusive learning environment at KIS and larger communities. Jiyoo hopes that her knowledge and love for science can inspire others to also pursue a path in STEM.

Although Jiyoo gravitated towards the humanities fields more often in middle school, she realized that her strengths came to light when she was compelled by scientific subjects. From reading about sustainable mushroom leather to watching videos by Kurzgesagt and TED-Ed about dyson spheres and the infinite hotel paradox, Jiyoo expanded her worldview with knowledge about the science of the universe. Jiyoo believes that her strengths are grounded in her ability to observe her surroundings and find realistic solutions; hence, when her town in New Jersey was flooded by a climate change-induced hurricane, she quickly acted to spread awareness about how climate change can cause natural disasters. Similarly, Jiyoo’s main interests in epidemiology have stemmed from her community’s adversities with vaccination during the pandemic and growing forms of novel research in the field.

Jiyoo has founded and taught a class about competitive debate and contemporary issues for 20 middle school students in the past, and she is excited to utilize her experience in instruction for other prospective students in FemSTEM programs. Moreover, she is currently enrolled in her school’s Calculus AB Independent Study Program and hopes to continue building a strong foundation in mathematics. While she began delving into STEM later than some of her peers, Jiyoo believes that her experience with the humanities is an indispensable asset when applying intriguing scientific concepts to real life. She is excited to meet many bright, passionate students and foster their love for STEM!
